 2023 Preview

Central finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Central finished eighth in Class 2A region four with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Cougars last playoff victory came during the 2000 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Central was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Cougars want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.0 points a game.

Central struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 47.1 points a game.

The Cougars would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-16 record. Since 2010, the Central football program has struggled with a record of 25-102.

Over the past 25 seasons, Central has not won much with a record of 69-181. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 55th in Class 2A and 358th in the AHSAA.

The Cougars are led by head coach Shundell Russaw who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Central. The Cougars have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Russaw.

The Cougars enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 8 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

This season, the Cougars will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region four.

The Cougars open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Verbena on Friday, August 25 at Red Devil Stadium. Last year the Verbena Red Devils finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in third place in Class 1A region four. The Red Devils lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Sweet Water by a score of 48-8.

Central and Verbena have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 1-3-0 record against the Red Devils. They last met in 2022 with Verbena winning by a score of 36-8.
